How to Treat Dog Dandruff - Written By Mary Russel

Do Dogs Get Dandruff?

“Yes, it is very possible for dogs to get dandruff. We see quite a bit in the winter months in response to the dry air. They can also show dandruff if they are nervous. As long as your dog is not showing any hair loss or red/irritated skin, you can use selsun blue (that is available for humans) safely to help reduce the dandruff. Also be sure not to bathe too frequently, as it dries out the natural oils in the skin. I only recommend baths monthly in dogs.”

I know first hand Dr. Purcell is right about the dandruff. This time of the year my dogs shed a lot so I spend more time on brushing than usual. I was surprised to see all of the flakes while I was grooming them the other day.

I did some research and learned that dandruff, the accumulation of dead skin cells, is common in pets. Other possible causes of dog dandruff include inadequate rinsing after shampooing, allergies, lack of daily brushing to stimulate the skin, and a deficiency of fatty acids in the diet.

To help in preventing dog dandruff, choose a brush with bristles that are soft enough to feel good on the back of your hand and groom daily, don’t bathe oftener than once a month and be sure to thoroughly rinse out any shampoo, use a shampoo formulated only for dogs containing moisturizer, bathe your dog in lukewarm water only, add humidity to the air in your home in the winter, and choose a high quality dog food that contains fatty acid. Make sure to provide your dog with plenty of fresh water.

To treat dog dandruff, start by washing it away. Try using a baby shampoo. If that doesn’t seem to do the trick, apply a pet dandruff shampoo that contains sulfur or salicylic acid, carefully following the directions, and rinsing thoroughly. Do NOT use a dandruff shampoo formulated for people. They can be harmful to your dog. Also do NOT use a shampoo with insecticides such as flea shampoo. They are very drying to the skin even if they contain moisturizers. You could also use the same colloidal oatmeal soap often used by people to relieve dry flaking skin.

Next, spray your dog with an oil rinse, available in pet stores, or rub your dog’s coat with the same hand lotion or cream that you use. You could also try rubbing a small amount of olive or vegetable oil on the dog’s skin once a week.

Add 1 to 3 teaspoons of flax seed oil to your dog’s diet daily.

If dandruff doesn’t subside within a few days, consult a veterinarian. The dog may have parasites, seborrhea, psoriasis, or a disease.

I am proud to say I am a moderator at the Selling Lounge and I truly love it. Here you will find such amazing people who are willing to help you succeed with your on line business with such sincerity it is actually mind blowing !

In this forum I have said more than once and with no doubt more than twice, without this lounge/forum Keleka’s Kollections would not be up and running.

I started this business due to a home based jewelry business where my clients would ask me “Why don’t you have a website” so I then decided to put my jewelry on a website…Well it is not that simple, there is marketing, learning how to submit to major search engines, using the correct keywords, tagging, RSS feeds,blogging etc. the list is endless! Some Thoughts on Ecommerce and Hurricane Season

Although the Atlantic Basin Hurricane Season officially runs from June 1 to Nov 30, we have just entered the peak part of the season, which usually occurs from about the second week of August through October.

What if you live in a land-locked state? Then this has nothing to do with you, right? Wrong! Hurricane season can have a big effect on those operating their sites from or near coastal areas, but it can also affect you even if you run your ecommerce site from Idaho. Here are some actions to think about taking if your location might be affected by one of these monster storms and some things to take into consideration even if you are far, far from the sea.

IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE HURRICANE COUNTRY
Make it your business to know what systems are churning out there, and where they might be heading. Also, if a storm is affecting an area or has just done so, be familiar with where that area is, and (in general) how widespread damages and power outages are. You might have customers in the area. Don't expect sales or communications from them just before or after a tropical system hits their area.

The same is true of your vendors or anyone you order business supplies from. Know where your vendors are for the same reasons.

Be patient! Your customers and/or vendors could very well be operating in survival mode. They may or may not have power, running water, or even a roof over their heads. And, depending on the extent of damage, that mode could last from just a few hours to weeks on end.

IF YOU LIVE IN HURRICANE COUNTRY
REMEMBER that category does NOT matter! We had thousands of dollars in damage and went for several days without power when Fay swept through last year . . . and she was "only" a Tropical Storm. You cannot operate your business by candlelight. Be prepared - not only with your disaster plans and emergency supplies kit - but also for possible downtime.

1- BACK UP YOUR SITE and everything related to it regularly, but ESPECIALLY if a system is approaching. If you are not using an internet based back-up service, pack the latest copy of your back tape or flash drive in your 'Go Kit,' so that it evacuates with you. I usually take my hard drive, as well.

2 - SAFEGUARD YOUR INVENTORY. Make sure it is stored in plastic and/or plastic bins, and elevated.

3 – If a storm is tracking towards your area, consider placing a NOTE on your site that you in the possible path of the storm, and anyone considering a purchase might want to complete that purchase by a certain day or time.

4 – If the NHC issues a WATCH for your area, you might want to advise customers that you downtime for your site may be imminent.

5 – If your watch is upgraded to a WARNING, consider putting your site on ‘vacation’ setting or disabling your cart. Consider the ramifications this scenario: Someone makes a purchase at 2:30 and, at 2:31, the storm knocks out power to your area – for two weeks! (It could happen) Better to be safe than sorry.

6 – Personally, I wouldn’t order a new batch of inventory with a storm headed in my direction, either. But, that's just me.

I am having surgery on Thursday 7/16/09. I most likely will not be online that day to approve websites, text ads, banner ads, and answer questions. ( I will try later that night)

I have a benign fibroid the size of a golf ball one of my ovaries. The surgery is going to be same day and done laparoscopically. Recovery time is only a week.

All members will get a 8 second timer before I leave for the hospital on 7/16/09. I will change it back to 10 seconds sometime on Friday. I do not know if I will be able to send a reminder to everyone or not.

I don’t pay for any twitter tools and I recommend you do not as well. There are plenty of free ones out there. I don’t claim to be a Twitter expert, but I wanted to write this after seeing that many of you don’t have a lot of Twitter followers. I consider that to be less than 200 for many and less than 50 for even more. If the only reason you use Twitter is to keep up with friends and fellow sellers that’s fine, but if you want to market yourself on Twitter that won’t work. My purpose in using Twitter is to get sales and market to people that might be interested in my products. To use Twitter as a marketing tool you MUST get MANY followers that are interested in your product line. As of right now I have 1,100+ followers. I’ve been with Twitter only about a month and I do not pay to get that many followers. A lot of people will ask if you want thousands of followers and they’ll want you to pay for a tool, but who knows if you’re targeting your niche market with those techniques.

How have I gotten 1,100+ followers? Twellow.com (and Search.twitter.com sometimes) and Tweetlater.com. Allow me to illustrate. I did post these two tools in another post but I wanted to post them here to encourage everyone to take full advantage of their tweets.

Twellow:
*People fill out profiles on Twitter. Find the people that are interested in what you sell and start following them. If you’re lucky they will start following you. If they don’t follow after a few days or weeks (whatever time limit you set) UNFOLLOW. You don’t have space for that. I’ll revisit this topic further down. The interest I look for is pretty easy. I sell Dog Supplies so I just have to find people that are interested in dogs. If you have troubles figuring out what your customers may be interested in or who to direct, post here and I or someone else may be able to give you suggestions. If you sell antiques I bet there is an interest for antiques. If you sell rummage sale items you can probably find people interested in rummaging. Rummaging interest could probably also be for antique sellers. If you sell kids clothes look for moms.
*Twellow.com is where I found most of my followers of late.

I use twellow in conjunction with Tweetlater.com. Some points about tweetlater.com:
1. Unless you are really interest in what someone has to say (like for me it’s celebrity dish) don’t follow the person unless they follow you. Some people start following you just so you follow them then un-follow you once you are following them. You don’t have space on your account to follow people that aren’t following you. You have a max of 2,000 people you can follow before Twitter starts looking at the ratio of followers to following on your account. I don’t know what the ratio is but I hit 2,000 the other day and they wouldn’t let me follow anyone new so I knew it was time to clean out a bunch of people that were following me. I give people a few days to follow me before I will un-follow them. I try to keep the follow to followers ratio pretty close.
2. I don’t recommend un-following people that are following you just because you you got ‘em. If you do that to someone like me I will un-follow you automatically.
3. Tweetlater has sooooo many functions. One being to un-follow anyone that un-follows you AND to automatically follow anyone that follows you. This is such a time saver.
4. You can also keep your multiple twitter accounts here so you can tweet from one central location.
5. You can set it up to receive emails when people tweet about keywords like your store name, something you sell or whatever you you need to watch out for. I should note this hasn’t worked for me as I only received one email from it.
6. Tweetlater also allows you to set up tweets when you’re away from your computer. If you want people to constantly get messages from you set it up here. Remember that MANY people that will be following you will be following 1,000 others. So you want to make sure they read something from you everyday. If you only tweet once or twice a day you are going to get lost in the shuffle.

Don’t just post about your store on twitter. For me, that gets . If someone is following you that is only following 50 people they are going to get frustrated if all you put up all day is visit my store with a link. Frustration leads to an un-follow. Tell everyone about your day so you are seen as a real person. See what everyone else is tweeting about. It can be dumb stuff like “I just got the out …. I hate .” You might start a conversation with someone else that hates . It makes you more personable.

I hope this helps everyone! I want to see higher numbers out there from everyone… if you want to use Twitter as a marketing .

Since my 5 year old daughter was born I have had a strong desire to become a stay-at-home mom. My husband doesn’t have the greatest work history or skills to get a high paying job to support my desire so I had to take it upon myself to try and make it work. I have a 3 year old son as well... I shouldn't leave him out of the mix.

I thought working for myself would be the best option. I needed it to be not time consuming because I wanted to be a mom while I was at home not a working mom. There are soooo many sites out there that claim to get you rich quick. One wanted me to market them and I don’t even think they had a product. It was just marketing this “idea.” I think you would call that a pyramid scheme. Luckily I didn’t pay for too many endeavors.

I signed up for a dropshipping company in the process of trying to find a stay-at-home mom carrier. I was given a website with little flexibility to optimize it for search engines and NO flexibility in adding to their week descriptions so I lost interest in that after a while. After a certain point I committed myself to no more investing in the idea of stay-at-home mom. There are plenty of internet ventures that are free. Or close to it anyway. Once I reached this point I decided to give my account with buyitsellit.com more attention. I still have the site with the dropshipped products so I thought I’d start a buyitsellit.com site. This way could start my own website at no cost (back when it was free) and there wasn’t much risk involved. People do have their qualms about dropshipping but I like it so we won’t address that here. So with the Buy It Sell It site I was able to optimize my website for search engines and add to the description to make items more enticing. I like writing as well so it allows me to practice those skills as well. I have quite a few pet items with the dropship company so I decided to start a dog store. There are a TON of ceramic dog dishes so I started with that and got suggestions from the buyitsellit forums to add more items so now it’s more of a dog supply store. It’s called Dog Dish Store. About this time I also committed to making this business a success. Before this I had the attitude of “I’ll give it a shot.” This time I’m doing this UNTIL it works. Buy It Sell It did start charging a monthly fee for having more than 10 items in your store so I’m paying that now but my sales cover the fee. It’s only $9.95 per month which is very reasonable when compared to other hosting sites. Right now I’m selling an item a week and I’m hoping to increase to an item a day and only increase from there. I have high goals and high expectations. I like how it’s going so far. Even if I can’t be a stay at home mom now I’d still like to be home when the kids get off of school so a part time stay at home mom would be ok too. I just started Cat Dish Store as well.

To further try and promote my store I started a blog. I wasn't sure what to write about so I thought I would do a blog on starting my own business. This helps me stay on track. It's my to-do list and I hope it helps others that are trying to start their own business. I call the blog Diary of a Working Mom.

All of this has me extremely busy, but I enjoy doing it and maybe it will allow me to become a stay-at-home mom someday... I can only pray it will.

Another major milestone in Bonanzle's development was reached today when we added detailed "Item Traits" for our categories. "Item traits" is the name we've given to structured data fields we're now taking. For example, if you are listing a handbag, there may be item traits available for "material," "brand," and "main color."

Why is this a big deal?

Red or yellow or green or blue? With item traits, you'll find that shoe!

More structured data = easier for buyers to browse inventory. Without item traits, there is no structured way to browse for a "red" necklace or "Leather" handbag or an "Action" movie or a "Size 10" shoe. Bigger ecommerce sites than Bonanzle have previously given statistics that sellers can see sales boosted by 30% or more by giving detailed trait information for their items.
A more natural way to give Google Attributes. We admit it: setting up Google Attributes for your items can be confusing and time consuming. It can be hard to know which attributes to use for a given category. To improve this situation, we have setup our item traits to automatically map to corresponding Google Attributes where possible. So if you specify your purse is "Leather," we'll automatically add a Google Attribute for [[material: leather]]. You can still manually add Google Base Attributes where you please, but we're hoping that item traits will make Google Attributes more of an afterthought -- only needed by the true Bonanzle overachiever.
Easier to give item recommendations (future). In eying our future plans to give buyers smart recommendations on what items they might like, traits are a no-brainer way to figure out similarities between items. The more we know about which items are similar, the more relevant our future recommendations can be.

In the long term, we believe the the benefits of getting structured information about items is going to vault Bonanzle's usability to buyers to a new echelon. In the short term, you probably won't notice much of a difference. We are going to wait about two weeks before we add item traits to Bonanzle search, to give sellers an opportunity to setup the traits for their items. And we're still probably at least a month away from buyer recommendations. But in building for the future, we see item traits as a key strategic underpinnning of how Bonanzle can continue to build its reputation among buyers as not only a fun place to shop, but also an efficient place to shop.

Note that, as yet, we aren't importing item traits via our item importers, but I'm hoping to get that implemented within the next couple days.

I've setup some pretty detailed help pages to get our existing sellers off on the right foot in setting up traits for their items. There are three different ways you can specify traits for your items -- we spent quite a bit of time trying to think through how to make this task as painless as possible, even for those with hundreds or thousands of items.

Given the number of systems touched by this change, I'd expect some anomalies during its first day or two of existence. We'll be listening to your reports via support and any issues with item traits fixed up as soon as can be or so.

Update: Most people have already noticed this, but I'd like to specifically point out that Google attributes no longer show up on the new item form because it was confusing and problem causing. You can still add your attributes on the form if you must, but we highly recommend using the batch editor, which is less error prone. You can still see what attributes you have set by looking there.

Many new changes to report today. I would normally describe them in great detail, but I just did that, then realized I wasn't logged in and lost about four pages of blog. D'oh! Here's the much more abbreviated gist of what's now online:

Bonanzle Booth Optimization Project. It's now linked from the My Bonanzle page if you're a seller. This collection of pages is going to accumulate all of the combined wisdom from the Bonanzle team and our many savvy sellers. We're hoping to use the BOP to publish articles on everything from "How to Take Good Pictures" to "How to Effectively Promote on Facebook" and everything in between. "Welcome to Bonanzle!" Newbies Yet another of our April changes aimed at driving return buyers to Bonanzle, we've added a greeting to our first time visitors who arrive via search to the item show page. Normally the home page would lay out the gist of Bonanzle, but we've learned that those who arrive via search often have no idea what site they're visiting or why they would want to return. We've also learned that a vast majority of these visitors visit one page, never to return. More details about the Welcome to Bonanzle blurb are available in the message forums.
Sales Origin Tracking. As promised in last week's blog, we've now enabled tracking of where sales are originating from for our premiere subscribers (you can see it on My Bonanzle -> View Stats). Currently you can see 1) Where the traffic originally arrived from (Google Organic, Google Products, Direct Traffic, Email etc.) 2) What pages (if any) on Bonanzle were visited before buying your items (Forums, Buy page, Profile page, etc.) and 3) What search terms were entered into search engines that led to finding your item.
See Feedback Left for Others. See pugs? I told you I would add it eventually! I think it was about two months ago I promised this feature would be "coming soon." Well, it has now landed.
Other Increment Design Improvements. As listed on the "What's New" page, a variety of other more minor design enhancements were added today to simplify navigation and generally make things better organized (main targets: item show page, My Bonanzle page, Advanced Booth Settings page).

This week we're hoping to make it easier to enter in extended item attributes, and to get those extra attributes better featured on the item show page. Along with our regular slate of bug fixes. Don't turn that dial.
